Why Do Summer Homeschool Programs?

Summer Homeschool Programs

Ah! The Dog Days of summer. The days when we can kick back and relax, enjoy the sun, hit the pool and just bask in the fact that there is no homework; there are no school obligations; there are no early mornings…For some that sounds absolutely glorious. For others, not so much. Because our kids are different, some can get back into the swing of things quickly and easily once school rolls around again. Others experience “Summer Brain Drain” where so much time away from the books means much more catching up in the fall. And still others get bored with “nothing to do.” And, for those considering homeschooling for the first time, the summer is a daunting season where they have to make critical decisions on what curriculum they will use, what homeschool academy they will partner with and how to begin homeschooling. If you’re in one of these categories, summer homeschool programs can really help. These, and a few more, are the very reasons that many choose to take advantage of summer school homeschool programs and make the most of your summer break!
Whether your summer school homeschool program is just an extension of what you have been doing all year or an opportunity to do something different and special, there are some great reasons to try summer homeschool programs.

Try it Out…

For those considering homeschool for the first time, the summer is a great opportunity to get your feet wet. It is a time where you can start slowly—introduce just a few courses; create some summer projects that challenge kids to be creative while they dig into topics that interest them or focus on subjects that have been a struggle. But beware, once you start homeschooling you are very unlikely to want to stop.

Gain more Freedom.

If you are already homeschooling, changing your schedule to include a summer homeschool program can create more freedom and flexibility throughout the school year. By stretching your homeschool year all year long you can take advantage of:

  • Frequent breaks and/or longer breaks several times throughout the year.
  • Less crowded vacations by scheduling them while school kids are back in school
  • Less burnout—with plenty of time for breaks and shorter long learning stints, kids are more energized and ready to learn.
  • More freedom all year-long. Those summer days count so by getting ahead over the summer, you create some flexibility and opportunities to lighten up all year-long.

Keep Learning Fresh.

By participating in a summer homeschool program, kids keep skills fresh. Whether it’s remembering their newly learned multiplication tables or practicing those valuable writing skills, kids gain confidence when learning comes easy. And learning comes easier when they are able to keep skills fresh.

Get More Creative.

Because summer learning is generally more laid back, you have a great opportunity to let the kids shine with their own creativity and God-given genius. Whether it’s just exploring a world outside, designing their own business model, or just following their personal interests, the laid back days of summer can mean learning that is much more exciting and creative.

Enjoy the Air Conditioning.

Let’s face it. Many of us live in areas where the summer months are brutally hot. No one wants to get outside when the air is humid and the 100 degree weather is much worse when you define the “real feel.” If this is where you live, why not take those summer days to knock out some school work and free up your fall and winter to enjoy the outdoors when it doesn’t make you sweat?

Jessica Parnell
Hello everyone! I’m Jessica Parnell — mom, homeschool evaluator, teacher, and CEO of Bridgeway Academy. In my 20+ years of experience as a homeschool mom and evaluator, I have had the privilege of meeting homeschoolers that take a variety of approaches to their education. It is their many stories and successes that inspire me in my own homeschooling and I love to pass on the knowledge that I have gained from them to other homeschooling families. The one constant that always remains true is that there’s no such thing as a “cookie cutter child.” Each child is fearfully and wonderfully made and as a result, learns and functions differently. It’s our job to ensure that we’re raising each child to fulfill their individual purpose and when we can teach in a way that inspires them, we are on our way to homeschool success. When I’m not writing or teaching my children, I like to ski, write and participate in triathlons. I graduated from Kutztown University with a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Masters in English and I am currently pursuing a degree in Neuroleadership.
