Stop and Smell the Cookies – Do you have a young reader with self-regulation challenges? Stop and Smell the Cookies is a beautifully illustrated book that follows a young boy named Dash who acts out his impulses, like speaking loud in quiet places or randomly karate chopping his dinner instead of eating it. Dash is a great kid; he just needs to slow down, stop, and smell the cookies. With techniques to help your child be present and regulate their impulses, you’ll want to add this to your 2024 summer reading list.
Memory Jars – Memory Jars tells the story of a young girl, Freda, who wants to savor delicious blueberries until next year. She realizes that if she saves them in a jar to make jam, she can preserve them for much longer. She then tries to put all her favorite things in a jar until she realizes that maybe her memory is the best safe keep.
Advanced Elementary
Franklin Endicott and the Third Key – Franklin Endicott and the Third Key is a great transition from picture books to chapter books for beginners. It’s about a young boy named Franklin who worries a lot. He accompanies his friend on an errand to replace a key and faces new worries and anxieties in a thrift shop. Join Franklin as he learns to manage worries that are beyond his control.
Squished: A Graphic Novel – In this hilarious graphic novel, eleven-year-old Avery struggles to find her space in a family of nine. With a quest to finally get her own room, or at least not have to share one with her younger siblings, she develops a conniving plan to take what she believes is rightfully hers. Join Avery on her adventures as she fights for her own space in a large family while juggling her academics and social life.
The Misfits – Do you have a child who feels like they don’t fit in? Well, they aren’t alone. In this captivating tale of The Misfits, every child can find a character with whom they can identify. Add The Misfits to your summer reading list to embark on this tale of a crime-fighting gang of preteens who use their natural talents to bring justice to their school and community.
Middle School
Alone – Children begin to explore more mature themes in their reading in middle school. In this thought-provoking, easy-to-read chapter book, twelve-year-old Maddie prepares for a sleepover, only to wake up alone with no internet or any form of communication. This book is excellent for middle school students as it provides an opportunity for self-reflection, and they get a chance to think about how they would respond if they woke up and the world they know and love was completely different.
National Park Mystery –Encourage your middle school student to go on an adventure with the books they read. Any book from the National Park Mystery Series is a great option. Your reader can follow Jake and his friends on missions into some of the world’s most famous national parks to discover mysteries and use their wit to escape danger. Add this book to your summer reading list for your adventurous middle school student.
Restart – Most middle school students want a chance to reinvent themselves, but it’s a reality for Chase. After a hard fall causes him to lose his memory, he goes on a journey of self-discovery to figure out what kind of friend and student he was. He has a decision to make: will he let his amnesia give him the boost he needs to turn over a new leaf, or will he revert to his old ways as he gains his memory? Add Restart to your 2024 summer reading list to give your middle school student a new perspective.
High School
Humble Pi – Humble Pi is an excellent book for high school students to learn about some of society’s most costly miscalculations. This gives the readers the freedom to feel better about their own mistakes in math and in everyday life. Encourage your teenager to read Humble Pi so they’ll remember that no one is right all of the time, not even the experts.
The Jesus I Wish I Knew in High School – High school can be very stressful for teens; even homeschooled students experience overwhelmed and stress. The average teen can feel overwhelmed by insecurities such as low self-esteem, extracurricular activities, family commitments, and thinking about their future after high school. These stresses can sometimes lead to damaging behaviors. The Jesus I Wish I Knew in High School features personal stories from various authors who share their own struggles with insecurities and how turning to Jesus helped them find healing.
