Walk around any homeschool convention and you’ll hear a lot of opinions about curriculum, strategies, and options. But there’s one topic that is often the most controversial and makes many seasoned homeschooling parents run for the hills: math. Choosing a homeschool math curriculum can feel like running a marathon in high heels, just plain painful. If math is a four letter word in your home, you’re not alone because, when it comes to tackling math, many homeschoolers and parents struggle. But, homeschool math haters can breathe a collective sigh of relief because we have a formula for finding the best homeschool math curriculum for your child that will add up to your success!

Learning Style + Teaching Style = Success!

Step 1: Know Your Child’s Learning Style
The best place to start in finding the best homeschool math curriculum for your child is to discover your child’s learning style. We all learn differently, but chances are your child has a preferred learning style. Choosing math curriculum based upon your child’s learning style means they will learn in the way they need to master the concepts and feel successful. And, because math skills build upon one another, it’s important that you choose a math curriculum that suits your child so they don’t have gaps in their math understanding. Don’t know how your child learns best? Find out here!

Step 2: Consider Your Teaching Style
Just because a math curriculum matches your child’s learning style doesn’t mean it’s going to work for you! Once you know how your child learns best, you need to consider how you want to teach. Are you a hands-on teacher or do you want your child to be self-directed? Do you like textbooks or work-texts? Do you want to teach math individually to your kids or concurrently? It’s just as important to find a homeschool math curriculum that suits your goals as a teacher as it is to match your child’s learning style.

Step 3: Find the Match
So you’ve figured out just how your child learns best and the type of curriculum that fits your family’s educational and teaching style. Now what? Well, here’s where it gets fun! It’s time to start weeding through the thousands of options to find the perfect fit for you. Wait, that’s more like torture! Instead of spending hours and hours reviewing homeschool math curriculum, consider starting with these popular choices based upon steps 1 and 2!

Jessica Parnell
Hello everyone! I’m Jessica Parnell — mom, homeschool evaluator, teacher, and CEO of Bridgeway Academy. In my 20+ years of experience as a homeschool mom and evaluator, I have had the privilege of meeting homeschoolers that take a variety of approaches to their education. It is their many stories and successes that inspire me in my own homeschooling and I love to pass on the knowledge that I have gained from them to other homeschooling families. The one constant that always remains true is that there’s no such thing as a “cookie cutter child.” Each child is fearfully and wonderfully made and as a result, learns and functions differently. It’s our job to ensure that we’re raising each child to fulfill their individual purpose and when we can teach in a way that inspires them, we are on our way to homeschool success. When I’m not writing or teaching my children, I like to ski, write and participate in triathlons. I graduated from Kutztown University with a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Masters in English and I am currently pursuing a degree in Neuroleadership.
