Homeschool Classroom Setup: 6 Simple Tips

by Jessica Parnell | Aug 16, 2024 | 2 min read

The new school year is here, and it’s an exciting time to create a dedicated learning space. While you don’t need a fancy classroom, the right ambiance can enhance your child’s learning experience. Let’s explore six simple ways to transform your homeschool classroom into an inspiring and productive environment.

#1: Prioritize Natural Light in Your Homeschool Classroom

When setting up a homeschool classroom, choosing a designated learning space with plenty of natural light is important. Look for a space that is free from distractions and noise and a place where your child can focus without interruptions.

Natural light can help create a positive and conducive learning environment, promoting alertness and overall well-being. Consider setting up the space near a window or in a room with good natural lighting to provide a comfortable and inviting atmosphere for your child’s learning.

#2: Decorate with Academic Inspiration

Everyone needs inspiration to thrive. If you went to a public school, think back to when you were in school. Remember those vibrant colorful alphabet posters in elementary school or the motivational quotes in high school? Setting the tone in your homeschool classroom can spark creativity for your young learners and create a sense of ambition for your older students.

Consider displaying artwork, maps, or nature-inspired elements for younger children, while incorporating quotes from inspiring figures or images of role models for older students. By carefully selecting age-appropriate decor, you can set the stage for a dynamic and engaging learning environment.

#3: Add Pencils, Markers, Erasers, and Plenty of Paper

Don’t underestimate the power of traditional tools, you’d be surprised how often parents overlook the basics. Studies have shown that writing things down can enhance memory and comprehension. Encourage your child to solve math problems, write stories, or take notes by hand even if they are taking an online class. Markers, erasers, colored pencils, and construction paper are also great tools for breaking up a busy day with art. These materials can help kids solve problems in style.

#4: Decide on a Storage Space

After a long day of school, it can be chaotic to have your child’s learning materials scattered around. It’s helpful to have a bookshelf, storage bins, or even a dedicated desk drawer to put all the books and supplies. Establishing an end-of-school routine, to put away belongings promotes responsibility and prepares your child for the next learning session.

#5 Invest in Comfortable Seating

Investing in comfortable seating is crucial for both students and parents. Sitting for a long time in an uncomfortable chair can lead to back pain and fatigue, hindering focus and productivity.

Look for chairs that provide adjustable height, lumbar support, and cushioned seats. By prioritizing ergonomics, you create a healthier and more enjoyable learning environment for everyone.

#6 Use a Checklist for Your Homeschool Classroom

Jessica Parnell
Hello everyone! I’m Jessica Parnell — mom, homeschool evaluator, teacher, and CEO of Bridgeway Academy. In my 20+ years of experience as a homeschool mom and evaluator, I have had the privilege of meeting homeschoolers that take a variety of approaches to their education. It is their many stories and successes that inspire me in my own homeschooling and I love to pass on the knowledge that I have gained from them to other homeschooling families. The one constant that always remains true is that there’s no such thing as a “cookie cutter child.” Each child is fearfully and wonderfully made and as a result, learns and functions differently. It’s our job to ensure that we’re raising each child to fulfill their individual purpose and when we can teach in a way that inspires them, we are on our way to homeschool success. When I’m not writing or teaching my children, I like to ski, write and participate in triathlons. I graduated from Kutztown University with a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Masters in English and I am currently pursuing a degree in Neuroleadership.
