There is perhaps nothing Shannon Kull enjoys more than photographing her family spending quality time together.
She, husband Rick and pre-teen daughter Abigail love bowling, skating and just about every activity they can do as a family.
Well, maybe with the exception of ziplining.
Shannon, who is one of Bridgeway Academy’s talented academic advisors for homeschooling kindergarten through 8th grade, wasn’t too keen on ziplining when Abigail wanted to celebrate a recent birthday at an adventure park. But she found a way to make-do.
“I was the photographer,” she says. “It was a great experience for Abigail and her friends, and for Rick, too. Watching Abigail having fun and me taking the pictures, I like that. Mom’s are always the photographers.”
Dedicated Educator and Academic Advisor
Shannon is more than just a mom and photographer, however. She’s an exceptional, dedicated teacher. She earned a Bachelor’s degree at George Mason University and a Master’s degree at Marymount University. She taught third grade for three years, and when Abigail came along, she decided to stay at home to raise her.
Many homeschool families feel that same need, to provide the best care that is possible for their child, through that of a loving, nurturing parent.
Shannon has been an academic advisor for Bridgeway’s K-8 homeschool students since 2014.
“Once the students are assigned to me or another academic advisor, we contact them and follow up with the enrollment procedures,” she explains. “We have online personality and learning style assessments, along with online placement tests, to give us a snapshot of their levels in math and reading. It helps us place them better.”
Shannon feels that the learning style and personality assessments, particularly for the K-8 children, are very valuable for the homeschool parent-teacher. Whether they are in kindergarten or younger, elementary, or middle school, lessons can be matched to learning style and personality. The assessments provide keys to help their child learn best.
She often chooses a set of curriculum and provides some samples so that the student and family can decide what they like best.
“I like to provide samples because I know how I am,” she says. “I like to see what I’m getting before I buy it.”
As an academic advisor, Shannon is also available to help her homeschool parent-teachers plan their teaching calendar. She also will research and provide supplemental material if a child is encountering problem areas with concepts like fractions.
